Though mostly forgotten today (except as a model in Impressionist paintings) the musician, poet, and organiser Nina de Villard, a.k.a. Nina de Callias, was a vibrant player in the Avant-Garde and Bohemian scene throughout the 1860s and ’70s, proudly refusing to bow to bourgeois respectability with her rowdy parties and often wild music. An immaculate writer who infused both realist and mythological poetic approaches with her razor-sharp stabs of socially cutting irony, she nonetheless published only a few poems during her life (mostly in the avant-garde Parnasse Contemporain anthologies); the rest were only published posthumously in an extremely rare edition.
