Rêvenance: A Zine of Hauntings From Underground Histories is the flagship journal of the Revenant Editions series, dedicated to the forgotten or untold histories of 19th Century avant-garde and other countercultures. It includes essays, translations, and many experimental forms of historical writing and research that connect those traditions to continuing radical communities today.
This issue focuses loosely on the encounter of experimental culture with the consumer market, and on members of the Jeunes-France (aka Bouzingo) group of the early 1830s, and includes Thomas Hood on the commercialisation of art, an 1876 poem about the incipient ‘zine culture in Washington, D.C. during Grant’s administration, a funny tale by Alphonse Allais about Baudelaire-worship and his minimal colour-field painting of 1883, a report on Romanticist novelty-sweets, a rant on translation and history by Olchar E. Lindsann, descriptions of the libertine activities of the revolutionary Mirabeau in prison and of the (pseudo)revolutionary hijinks of the Libertine Marquis de Sade in prison, demonic erotica by Achille Devéria, a neo-medievalist dinner invitation between two 19th century avant-gardists, Nerval experimentally transmuted by Unentesi, an essay and examples of avant-garde chronicling by Jim Leftwich, a poetic chronicle of the political assassination of Dartington College of Arts by Sam Richards, a book review by Olchar Lindsann, and poems by Amable Tastu, Théophile Gautier, Philothée O’Neddy, Monte-Naken, and images by Célestin Nanteuil.
Featuring: Philothée O’Neddy, Olchar E. Lindsann, Thomas Hood, Alphonse Allais, Amable Tastu, Théophile Gautier, Augustus Maquet, Célestin Nanteuil, Achille Devéria, Mr. Thursday, Gérard de Nerval, Retorico Unentesi, Jim Leftwich, Sam Richards, Monte-Naken, Alphonse Karr, Alboize du Pujol, & Agnes Lee.
