Irène Hillel-Erlanger is long overdue for recognition of her important role in the cultural underground of the early 20th Century: innovative poet and one of the first female filmmakers in France, she also funded much of Paris Dada's activity and published a hermetically-coded dada novel. Her work as an alchemist immersed her in the occult underground, where her early death swarmed with bizarre rumours.
“For Love”, her most formally experimental poem, is a remarkably beautiful, linguistically playful masterpiece which feels startlingly contemporary, weaving a wide range of innovative techniques including intense visual and typographic play, impressionistic collision of fragmented glimpses of imagery, the interweaving of found text and overheard conversation, and the intense wordplay and unapologetic exuberance of its sound-patterning. For Love coordinates and transcends all these idioms.
